The lack of affordable housing opportunities and soaring costs in the private market make it difficult for all Americans to secure rental or owner-occupied housing. It&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/alsoweb.org\/nonprofit-blog\/housing-crisis-2022-its-outsized-impact-on-people-with-disabilities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">particularly tough for low-income families and individuals with IDD.<\/a> Accessible and safe public housing is rare. Determining eligibility criteria for financial assistance is quite complex.<\/p>\n<p>ALSO is fully aware of these problems. That&#8217;s why we offer high-quality housing options, so those with IDD thrive in the least restrictive environment. We&#8217;ve done this by <a href=\"https:\/\/alsoweb.org\/nonprofit-blog\/what-to-know-about-home-accessibility-grants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">securing funding opportunities, <\/a>and nurturing community support. Most of all, we&#8217;re a <strong>top provider<\/strong> of supportive services in Oregon.<\/p>\n<h3>Supported Living Services<\/h3>\n<p>ALSO support models range from 24-hour in-home support to community living for those who are more independent. It&#8217;s just the right balance between nurturing strengths and accommodating needs for <a href=\"https:\/\/alsoweb.org\/supported-living-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cognitive, behavioral, and physical disabilities.<\/a>\u00a0We know that as someone grows and learns, they&#8217;ll have different needs. Therefore, we&#8217;re accustomed to accommodating both temporary and permanent supportive housing.<\/p>\n<h3>Residential Care<\/h3>\n<p>Our residential services are known for their <a href=\"https:\/\/alsoweb.org\/residential-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">person-centered wraparound approach.<\/a> We work closely with families, human services, case management, and others to ensure the best possible quality-of-life.\u00a0Days are filled with fun activities within housing units, with roommates, and in communities.\u00a0The result is equal opportunity at home, work, and in school.<\/p>\n<h2>Top Ways People with Disabilities Make Their Houses into Homes<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-43 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/alsoweb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/2.png\" alt=\"young-adult-with-developmental-disabilities-works-on-life-skills-through-cooking\" width=\"740\" height=\"488\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/alsoweb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/2.png 740w, https:\/\/alsoweb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/2-300x198.png 300w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 740px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 740\/488;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Glenda Van Ortwik is one of the people that ALSO supports in the Supported Living Services Program. We asked her about how she makes her house a home.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1. How do you make the place you live more unique to you?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Glenda: I have my cat. Dragon loves to play with balls. Another cat, Orion, belongs to my roommate. I take care of Dragon completely on my own. He loves to talk.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Glenda&#8217;s comment is notable because caring for a pet gives Glenda a sense of purpose and responsibility. It&#8217;s great for her well-being. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Glenda: My favorite thing in my room are my pictures. I have a picture of my brain on my wall. My favorite picture is one of the Winnie the Pooh characters from Disneyland.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Glenda has a private place where she makes choices regarding her individual needs.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. How have you made things more accessible in your home?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Glenda: I got a Ring Camera to keep an eye on my neighbors. There&#8217;s some neighborhood kids who mess with my house, so it makes me feel more secure. I&#8217;ve got chore charts to help me out with chores.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Glenda benefits immensely from assistive technology that keeps her safe. Other types of technical assistance are facilitated by Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) to keep her on track with self-care tasks.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>3. What does independent living mean to you?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Glenda: It means that I get to do stuff with a little help if needed. Everything else, I get to be independent with\u2013\u00a0like\u00a0going on walks and taking the bus. At doctor appointments, I advocate for myself\u2013 I say what I want for my medical care&#8230;<em>and<\/em> what I don&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So what\u00a0insights does Glenda&#8217;s interview reveal? That\u2019s what I like about ALSO\u2019s supported living. The other place had 15 others at the same time. They couldn\u2019t stay with one particular person all day long.
